Covid-19 restrictions allow Play Areas to reopen from July 4th. Please follow all guidance issued by Play Area operators.
There are three outdoor children’s play areas in Hesket Parish. The Parish Council owns, and is responsible for the upkeep of, Armathwaite Play Area, located off Brackenrigg, off the main road through the village. In Calthwaite, a Community Group shares responsibility with Eden District Council for the upkeep of Calthwaite Play Area, which is located to the south of the primary school. In Plumpton the play area is located within the school grounds, and is cared for by a local community group.
The Parish Council makes provision for recreation grounds under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, section 19 and does so thorough the management of Armathwaite Play Area, and the provision of grants to the other play areas when requested.
Armathwaite Play Area

Armathwaite Play Area is a 1.3 acre site gifted to the Parish Council by Border Engineering Contractor Ltd in 1981 for use as a playground, accepted per the Local Government Act 1972, section 139. As the owner of the site, the Parish Council is responsible for all upkeep and maintenance. Details of costs incurred in the last three years can be found here – Armathwaite Play Area Annual Costs.

Calthwaite Play Area was officially opened in June 2017 after three years of fundraising and commitment from the local community, including a contribution from Hesket Parish Council.

Plumpton Play Area
The children’s play area is located in the grounds of Plumpton Primary School. A local committee are currently planning an upgrade to the area. The committee are raising funds for the upgrade, and the Parish Council has made a donation towards these costs. For more details of the project, please visit their Facebook Page.
